ABOUT
Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) was one of the greatest masters of Japanese woodblock printing (ukiyo-e). Born into a samurai family, he chose the path of an artist and achieved nationwide fame with his seminal landscape series 'The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido'.
In his final years, following the devastating Great Ansei Earthquake of 1855, Hiroshige embarked on his crowning lifetime achievement: to memorialize the beauty, resilience, and seasonal spirit of his beloved Edo. Created between 1856 and 1858 (completed posthumously with Hiroshige II), the resulting 119 prints captured celebrations, temples, bridges, and everyday life with groundbreaking perspective. The collection profoundly influenced European Impressionists, including Vincent van Gogh, who famously painted oil copies of two prints.
This website organizes 117 of these classic views into walkable itineraries comparing vintage masterpieces with contemporary Tokyo. Select any route from the map or list below to begin your journey.
